KULINARYA tour highlights
Carlito's Workshop, San Pablo City Laguna.
Carlito Ortega is a sculptor who works in welded steel and brass, as well as with old hard wood. He creates figurative works in both intimate and monumental scale inspired by Philippine folk art and lore. An avid art collector, he has a striking collection of contemporary art.
He is also a land artist whose garden is his marterpieces. Come and visit his artist workshop and garden. Inspired by the American Southern-style plantation homes, his house evokes images of the movie Gone with the Wind. His garden boast of hard wood trees and rare plants.
Kusina Salud, San Pablo City, Laguna
Patis Tesoro, renowed fashion designer and advocate of indigenous fabrics, has thrown open the doors of her enchanting country home (photos of which have found their way into international interior design books.) Get a chance to experience its eclectic wit and rustic charm. It is is a Balinese and Bohemia rolled into a cozy home, tickled by the sound of a rolling brook and embraced by Banahaw ferns and giant vines.
Chef Paul Poblador of Salud Bistro in Baguio (recently nominated one of the best restaurant in the country by the readers of Philippine Tatler and soon to reopen in Manila) has created a memorable menu of Filipino favorites prepared with fresh ingredients sourced from nearby farms and market.
Ugu Bigyan : Potter's Garden Tiaong Quezon
For Ugu Bigyan, celebrated potter, home has always been in Tianong, Quezon. In his workshop, he shapes, glazes, and fires the ceramic pieces he has become famous for. He specializes in large pots with imaginative glazes, delicate dried wood-and ceramic pieces, and wall tiles. His creations are used by up-scale hotels and posh resorts such as Amanpulo, Campo Travieza, Casa Patricia, El Nido and Villa Escudero.
His artist workshop is a cluster of quaint huts, connected by brick paths, and surrounded by a lush garden. Comfortable reclining chairs, day beds, and huge pillows tempt visitors to slow down, relax and breath in the artistic energies of his workshop. Strewn all over the garden and in a high ceiling gallery, Ugu's works are on display and are for sale.
Ugu serves lunch at his workshop. His sumptuous native fare - usually fresh mussels cooked with mustard leaves, squid sisig, grilled tilapia, and inihaw na liempo are served on his beautiful ceramic plates and bowls.
