Corregidor
Island Day Tour. Corregidor is known the world over for
its role in war, bravery, and history. It is three miles long
and 1 ½ miles at its widest point, facing the China Sea
and flanked by the provinces of Bataan and Cavite. A rock island
remarkably shaped like a tadpole at the entrance of Manila Bay,
Corregidor's strategic location was vital in the defense of Manila
during World War II.
The
name 'Corregidor' came from the Spanish 'corregir', or 'to correct',
since the island was a checkpoint for vessels entering Manila
Bay during the Spanish and American occupations. Perhaps it is
Corregidor's geographical proximity to Bataan and existing inaccurate
historical writings that cause many to associate the rock island
with the Death March, which came shortly after the Fall of Bataan.
Today, Corregidor's rich history continues to draw Filipinos and
foreign tourists alike, making the island one of the most visited
tourist spots in the country. For first-time Filipino visitors,
Corregidor reacquaints them with the past and helps them discover
their national identity. The island is the home of many historical
treasures such as:
Malinta
Tunnel - Completed in 1922, Malinta Tunnel was formerly an arsenal
and underground hospital. Located under the Malinta hill, it served
as bomb-proof headquarters for Fil-American troops during World
War II.
Lighthouse
- Originally built by the Spaniards on 1836 and one of Corregidor's
oldest landmarks, the Lighthouse offers a great view of Manila
Bay, the South China Sea, and the rest of the island. It is located
at Topside and is 628 feet above sea level.
Topside
and Middleside - Like a virtual museum, Topside and Middleside
include remains of soldiers' and officers' barracks like the Mile-Long
Barracks, and many artillery batteries such as Battery Hearn.
President Manuel L. Quezon Park - A statue
of President Quezon stands at the north entrance of the Malinta
Tunnel's 1,000-bed hospital where he was inaugurated as the President
of the Commonwealth for a second term at the height of the Japanese
attack in Corregidor.
General
Douglas MacArthur Park - A statue of the General stands at the
Lorcha Dock ruins at Bottomside where he boarded a boat to Mindanao
on March 11, 1942. He then sailed to Australia where he sent his
famous message: "I shall return."
Japanese Garden of Peace Park - Located at
Tailside, the park features a 10-foot stone Buddha, a Shinto Shrine,
and various Japanese soldier memorial shrines and anti-aircraft
weapon relics. This is also a place of prayer for Japanese war
veterans and their relatives.
While
reacquainting its visitors with history, Corregidor shall soon
provide more scenic adventures and modern amenities. Remains of
barracks and artillery batteries will soon co-exist with shops,
restaurants, resorts, and cottages. The Corregidor of the future
will be an island of old and new memories, a meeting of history
and modernity.
