About Asiana Airlines

On February 17, 1988 Asiana Airlines was established as the second major Korean carrier. After that, in order to ensure competitiveness with the already existing Korean carrier, we placed our focus on the most effective way to approach the consumers.

Competing with over 20 years of know-how, extensive schedules, absolute predominance in the market, and thousands of loyal members instantly became an enormous obstacle. Therefore, Asiana determined that the best way for us to compete was to create a distinct differentiation in the quality of our services.

To improve service, Asiana Airlines began by upgrading the standards used for selecting flight attendants. A restriction that all flight attendants must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree to be hired was enforced. Also, rather than following competitor's guideline of a 10week regime, Asiana Airlines increased flight attendant training to 12 full weeks resulting in refined skills in safety and in-flight service.

Asiana Airlines also selected the finest dish settings offered in the world at that time. And also by introducing new aircraft Asiana Airlines were able to significantly reduce our average aircraft age. With these improvements in service and quality, customers began to choose Asiana Airlines over the previously monopolizing airline.

More than anything, an opportunity was created in Korea's airline industry to increase the quality of overall service. By purchasing new aircraft, Asiana played a significant role in its competitor's decision to replace its old aged aircraft significantly.
